History

The Tiger I heavy tank rolled onto the battlefield in 1942 to counter powerful Soviet armor. Built with thick steel plates, its armor could stop most tank shells fired from long distances. It was designed to lead breakthrough attacks through strong enemy defenses.

The tank's main gun was a deadly 88mm cannon originally used to shoot down airplanes. This gun could destroy opposing tanks before they could get close enough to return fire. However, the Tiger was very heavy, fuel-hungry, and often suffered mechanical breakdowns.

Despite its mechanical troubles and complex production, the Tiger earned a terrifying reputation in places like Normandy and Russia. Today, it remains one of the most famous armored fighting vehicles from the Second World War.
