History
The North American T-6 Texan was the most famous advanced training plane of the World War II era. It prepared thousands of military aviators to fly high-speed fighters and heavy multi-engine bombers.
Colombia purchased T-6 Texans starting in 1940 to build up its young air force. During World War II, Colombian pilots flew them on coastal surveillance missions to look for German submarines hiding near shipping lanes near the Panama Canal.
The Colombian Air Force continued flying the Texan well into the Cold War. It served as a pilot trainer and light ground-attack plane before being retired when jet aircraft became common.
