History
The T-54 and T-55 series of tanks emerged in the late 1940s and 1950s as the Soviet Union prepared for modern Cold War warfare. They featured rounded, dome-shaped turrets that made them tough targets to hit and penetrate. The T-55 version was also sealed with air systems to protect its crew on a nuclear battlefield.
The Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies built tens of thousands of T-55 tanks. They were relatively light and cheap compared to Western tanks, making them easy to field in huge numbers. They stood as the primary armored threat facing NATO in Europe for decades.
Soviet factories shipped large numbers of T-55 tanks to North Vietnam, where they took part in major offensives during the Vietnam War. Because of their simplicity, upgraded T-55s continued serving in dozens of armies around the world long after the Cold War ended.
