History
The Su-27 was designed in the Soviet Union during the 1970s. Its main job was to be faster and stronger than the best American jets of that time. Engineers wanted a plane that could fly long distances and turn very quickly during a fight. It first flew in 1977 and entered regular service in the mid-1980s. It became famous for its incredible ability to perform stunts in the air that other planes could not do. Later versions were made for aircraft carriers and for attacking ground targets. Today, it remains a very important part of the Russian Air Force and is flown by many other countries around the world.
