History

The Richelieu was constructed just before World War II began to protect French waters from powerful foreign navies. It had an unusual design, grouping all eight of its giant main guns onto two four-barrel turrets positioned entirely on the front deck.

After France was occupied, the ship relocated overseas and eventually joined Allied forces. Upgraded in the United States, the Richelieu served alongside the British Royal Navy against Japanese forces in the Pacific Ocean. After the war, it provided fire support during conflicts in Indochina during the early Cold War.
