History
The Renault FT was created during World War I to help soldiers cross muddy battlefields and barbed wire. It was the first operational tank ever built with a fully revolving turret on top, the crew in front, and the engine placed safely in the back.
This simple and clever layout worked so well that nearly all modern tanks still copy it today. Thousands of these light tanks rolled into combat, helping French and Allied forces break through enemy trench lines near the end of the Great War. Later, many remained in service during World War II.
