The MAS-36 of France

History

The French army wanted a modern, compact rifle that could replace older long rifles like the Lebel. The result was the MAS-36, which featured a distinctive forward-bent bolt handle and stored its own spike-style bayonet directly under the barrel.

The MAS-36 saw action when France defended against invasion in 1940. After the country was liberated, French forces continued using this reliable firearm for many years. Troops carried it into battle during colonial conflicts, early Cold War missions, and even in parts of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
