The Mark IV Tank of United Kingdom

History

British inventors designed the Mark IV tank during World War I to solve the problem of trench warfare. Mud, deep craters, and barbed wire made it very hard for soldiers on foot to advance across the battlefield. This heavy steel vehicle could roll right over wire fences and climb across wide trenches.

The Mark IV first saw combat in 1917 and became the most produced British tank of the war. Some had big cannons, while others carried machine guns. Crews had to deal with intense heat, choking engine smoke, and loud noise inside the unventilated steel hull. Despite mechanical breakdowns, the Mark IV proved to world armies that armored vehicles were the future of ground fighting.
