History
During the static fighting of World War I, every soldier needed a way to dig protective ground cover quickly. Austria-Hungary and other European armies issued compact entrenching shovels as standard gear for all infantrymen.
The tool was strapped to a soldier's belt or pack so it was always within reach. Men used it to dig shell scrapes, drain wet trenches, and occasionally as a brutal close-combat melee weapon.
These durable trench tools remained standard infantry equipment through both World Wars. Many remained stockpiled and used by reserve units well into the Cold War.
