History
The Ilyushin Il-10 was built by the Soviet Union near the end of World War II. Designers wrapped heavy armor plates around the engine and cockpit to shield the crew from ground fire.
North Korea received dozens of these sturdy propeller aircraft before invading the south in 1950. In the first weeks of the war, they flew low over dirt roads to bomb outposts and strafe convoys.
As United Nations jet fighters arrived in the war zone, the slower Il-10s became easy targets in the sky. Most were shot down or bombed on their runways, but they showed North Korea's early focus on ground-attack tactics.
