History
During the 1950s, the new West German military needed a modern service weapon to face potential Cold War threats. Firearms company Heckler & Koch refined an innovative roller-delayed blowback system to create the G3 battle rifle. It entered official service in 1959.
The G3 fired the strong 7.62mm NATO bullet. It was capable of semi-automatic single shots or full automatic fire from a 20-round box magazine. Troops liked it because stamped steel parts made it durable in wet, muddy, or dusty conditions.
The G3 became West Germany's standard military rifle for several decades. It was also exported or licensed to dozens of friendly nations across the globe, becoming one of the most iconic infantry rifles of the Cold War era.
