History
After aligning with the Soviet Bloc, the Cuban armed forces adopted the AKM rifle to replace various older American and European weapons. The rifle was prized because it rarely jammed and could handle sand, dirt, and water.
Cuban soldiers carried the AKM during territorial defense drills at home and during overseas deployments in Africa during the Cold War. It became the most recognizable individual firearm in modern Cuban military history.
